How to download your Google Takeout

Google’s steps, as its help page gives them on 29 October 2026. Use a computer: Google recommends downloading and viewing Takeout exports on a desktop computer, not a mobile device.1

  1. Sign in to your Google Account, then go to takeout.google.com.The products you use are ticked already.
  2. Untick any product you don’t want in the download. Some products have a button such as All data included, so you can keep only parts of them.
  3. Select Next step.
  4. Under Delivery method, choose Send download link via email. You can also send it to Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box. An archive added to Drive counts toward your storage.
  5. Under Export type, choose One-time archive. Under File type, choose Zip files, then pick a maximum Archive size.If your data is bigger than the size you pick, it is split into several files.
  6. Select Create export. It can take from a few minutes to a few days. Most people get the link the same day.
  7. In the email from Google, select Download archive. You may be asked for your password again. The archive expires in about 7 days and can be downloaded 5 times.
Good to knowDownloading your data doesn’t delete it from Google. You can’t choose a date range: Google doesn’t support exporting data for a set time frame.1

What your Wrapped will show

A slide for each of the parts below, worked out in your browser from your own file. Near the end is a share card you can save if you want to.

What the export shows, and what it doesn’t

The export is a lot, but it isn’t everything Google holds.1, 4

In your export

A copy of your account, product by product.

Content

The content you create or receive, such as email, photos, documents and YouTube comments.4

Activity

The activity your settings save to your account, such as searches, videos you watched and the Chrome history you sync.2, 4

Not in it

  • Maps Timeline, possibly. Google saves your visits and routes on each of your signed-in devices, with an optional encrypted backup.5, 6

  • Items still being deleted, and possibly changes made while the archive was being built.1

  • Chrome data locked with your own sync passphrase. Google’s export documentation says encrypted Chrome data shows as “Your data is encrypted and cannot be exported”.3

  • Data that isn’t tied to your account. When you’re signed out, Google stores what it collects with identifiers tied to your browser, app or device.4

For anything else, Google points to a data access request form.1

Questions people ask

How long does Google Takeout take?

From a few minutes to a few days, depending on how much is in your account. Google says most people get the link the same day. If you’re enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program, the archive is scheduled two days ahead.1

Why is my location history missing from Takeout?

Google saves your Maps Timeline visits and routes on each of your signed-in devices, and Timeline isn’t available in Maps on a computer.5 Google’s My Activity help also notes that Timeline data is saved to your Maps Timeline rather than to My Activity.7 Your export can still hold Maps activity, such as places you searched for.2

How do I open a Google Takeout file?

Zip files open on almost any computer, while tgz files may need extra software on Windows. Inside, archive_browser.html explains the file formats and how to open them. HTML files open in any browser, and CSV and JSON files open in a text editor.1

Is it safe to use a Takeout viewer?

It depends on where your file goes. Google’s help page describes sharing an export with a third party through that party’s own upload page or access point, which hands them a copy.1 The Wrapped here reads your file inside your browser, on a page whose security policy stops its scripts from loading anything through fetch, WebSocket and similar interfaces.8 You can watch your browser’s Network panel while it runs to check. How it works lists every file and field it reads.
